Chapter 12
James
Over the next few days, life was a whirlwind of activity. Besides daily military funerals, visiting grieving families, and wounded and dying military personnel, the daily planning and tasks for the upcoming battle in Tennessee was taking up every spare moment of my life. Many nights, I would work into the early morning hours, take a quick nap, and then quickly go back to my desk and work. After a few days of that routine, Jason had a nearby office cleared out and a small bed, couch, and desk put into it that I could use. I learned that heâd had a colonel kicked out to make room, an action that was highly unpopular with the colonel, until apparently Paul had cornered him in a stairwell and very noisily made him aware that heâd better stop complaining, or Paul might âaccidentallyâ assign him to a West Texas border crossing, where he could spend the rest of his career counting prairie dogs and coyotes.
It was early, and I was lying on the cot debating getting up and going to my office. Melissa, Cynthia, T-Bone, my daughter-in-law, and my grandkids had all visited me on the base the previous night to spend some time and have dinner together. I hadnât even been home in almost a week. I was missing all of them and pushing myself way too hard.
I vowed that when it was all over, Melissa and I would take a few days off and disappear. Maybe a nice visit back to the mountains in Tennessee and Kentucky would be just what the doctor ordered. Dave had offered for us to stay at the old farm across the road, and a week or so there, with some quiet time for fishing, maybe even some deer hunting, would rejuvenate my body and mind. Melissa would love it as well; I would have to talk to her about it.
My phone started ringing, and I dragged myself into a sitting position.
âGeneral Hunley,â I answered groggily. I was still so tired I felt half asleep. I needed to find some coffee.
âGeneral, I hate to bother you, sir,â Paul replied. âDid I wake you up?â
âNo, I was already awake. Trying to decide if I have enough energy to get up. Whatâs going on?â
âWe found some of the Mexican and Chinese armor and troops, and we miscalculated. They didnât go northeast straight towards Tennessee; they changed direction and went east into Alabama. We found them hiding in a closed cast iron cookware foundry in far southeast Tennessee. A little town outside of Chattanooga called South Pittsburgh,â Paul explained.
âI think Iâve heard of that place. Of course, I know nothing about cast iron, except that my grandma made the best biscuits and cornbread in cast iron skillets. Does it look like theyâre staying a while, or are they getting ready to move out soon?â I asked.
âFrom what Iâve seen on the intelligence photos, it doesnât look like theyâre in any hurry to move. They still have quite a bit of time left if they stick to the timetable on the documents Hector and Raul brought back.
